The 2012 reunion was held October 19th to the 22 in Las Vegas at the Alexis Park Resort. A great time was had by all. First time attendees included:
EM3 Alfredo Hernandez and his son, from Norwalk, CA.
RM2 Larry Miller and his wife, from Plano, TX.
RM3 DJ Kerr and his wife, from Waterloo, IA.
STCM Bob Beaty*, from San Diego, CA.
STG2 Steve van Hoose* and his wife from San Diego, CA.
Returning attendees included:
ET3 Tom Carlson and his wife, from Stafford, VA.
MM3 Mike Schubert and his wife, from Huntington Beach, CA.
MMFN Jack Bobeng, from Matthews, NC.
RM2 Jim Wade and his wife, from South English, IA.
RM2 Bill Morgan and his wife, from Morton Grove, IL.
RM2 Guy Cornett and his wife, from Austin, TX.
RM3 Steve Johnson and his wife, from Lakeville, MN.
STG2 Dave Thomas* and his wife, from Eugene, OR.
STG3 Ross Allen and his wife, from Belmont, CA.
As you can see we had several plank owners in attendance. Most of the shipmates in attendance served onboard during the first decade. Alfredo Hernandez was the only representative from the 1980s having been aboard from 1985 to 1988. To date the STs and RMs from the 1970s compose the core of the membership. Hopefully participation will expand to those that kept the ship afloat throughout her time of service. This was the first reunion where we did not have an officer in attendance. Tom Carlson does not count as he had not yet crossed over when he was aboard.
After a welcome reception Friday evening, most went on a tour Saturday morning to Hoover Dam with stops at Ethel M Chocolate Factory and the dam by-pass bridge. The tour bus driver/guide provided a glimpse of the home of Wayne Newton on our way out of Vegas.
At the Association meeting on Sunday, Bill Morgan, Dave Thomas, and Guy Cornett were re-elected as President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer respectively. Discussion included what could be done to increase attendance at the reunions and how we could increase Association membership. One idea proposed was to shift the reunion date to the summer in hopes of attracting those shipmates with school age children. All in attendance agreed to make an effort to contact former shipmates and encourage their participation in the Association. It was decided to have the next reunion during the summer of 2014 in San Francisco.
The Sunday banquet was an enjoyable event with great food and conversation. A highlight of the evening was the raffling of the quilt created by Marie Thomas. The winner of the Marvin Shields theme quilt was Ann Miller; a total of $337 was raised from the sale of the raffle tickets which will be used by the wives & guests at the next reunion.
A farewell gathering on Monday morning marked the end of another reunion. Many of those who attended would like to gather more often as three days every two years goes by way too quickly.
Stay tuned for further information about 2014 as plans develop.
Photos will be added as soon as we learn how to add them or find someone to edit the site for us.
